| Mrs.
Doyle has been our customer for several years. She called me a few months back to get a
referral for some bathroom repair work. Some of the tiles on her bathroom floor were loose
and had cracked. When I said I would send Gilbert to take a look at it she was surprised.
“I thought you just did painting Lynn” she said. Well, Gilbert has very good carpentry
skills and I thought we could help our loyal customer.
When Gilbert got there he realized that the home was over
25 years old. The bathroom was showing its age. He set about the task of fixing the few
tiles on the floor that had cracked. When he pulled up the tiles he discovered that the
sub-floor (plywood) was in poor condition and the floor joists needed reinforcing. That
meant pulling the tub to get to the area that required attention. Mrs. Doyle consulted
with us and realized that she would have to replace all the fixtures and re-tile the
floor.
The decision to “pull and replace” is wise
when confronted with bathrooms, 25-30 years old. Just replacing one fixture at a time
creates imbalance in the design (old competing with the new) and adds to the cost in the
long-run. Another important benefit is the ability to upgrade the walls and sub-floor by
using a waterproof tile backer (a concrete and fiber glass composite used to prevent
seepage into the drywall and sub-floor).
Mrs. Doyle was so happy with our work on the bathroom
that she asked us to upgrade all the other bathrooms in the house. Gilbert and Mark did a
very good job of working within the existing design and coming up with cost-effective
replacements.
I got a call from Mrs. Doyle before she mailed us the
check. “All these years I replaced one item here, one item there, the costs kept
building and the bathrooms looked worse each year. “Pull and Replace” is a
really sensible way to upgrade your bathrooms without the cost of redesigning/remodeling.”
